Juggling Motherhood and Entrepreneurship // 3 Realistic Tips from a Mompreneur
I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge how wild this journey of building a business and a family simultaneously can be. From the chaos of morning routines to the thrill of supporting new clients, it's a rollercoaster ride unlike any other. As a mom of four and a seasoned entrepreneur, I've learned a thing or two (or three) along the way and wanted to share some of my tips to help you on your journey.
REALIZING THE MYTH OF BALANCE
Let's address the elephant in the room, shall we? Balance. The elusive concept we're all chasing but never quite seem to catch. Here's the truth: balance doesn't exist—at least not in the way we often imagine it. Instead, think of it as a constant teeter-totter act. Some days, your business will demand more attention; other days, your family will take the spotlight. And that's okay. Embracing the ebb and flow of life as a business owner and mom is the first step towards finding peace in the chaos.
This balance can even be day-to-day, there are days where I plan to get up early and get some work done, but someone decides to snuggle up and want my attention in the morning. Or there are days I decide to stay up a little later and get a few things done and the that’s when one of my teens wants to chat. Choosing when to split the time is exhausting, and most times I let my heart lead.
EMBRACING IMPERFECTION AT HOME
Raise your hand if you've ever felt guilty about the state of your house amidst the whirlwind of business and family life. (Raises hand). But here's the reality check we all need: it's okay if your house is messy, and there's a mountain of laundry waiting to be tackled. Your kids won't remember the spotless floors or perfectly folded towels—they'll remember the moments spent with you and the memories. And as for your business? Well, it's how you give back to your family. So, don't be afraid to invest in help, whether it's hiring a house cleaner or enlisting your kids' help (hey, delegation skills start young!).
I ask for help, with my family, kiddos and outside help. I am not superwoman and should not be expected to do it all. Currently my fave tool is Instacart! Grocery shopping is so much easier when it gets delivered to my door!
BUILDING YOUR DREAM TEAM
Here's a game-changer that took me far too long to realize: you don't have to do business all by yourself, it’s actually more FUN with others who see your vision. Building your dream team isn't just about scaling your business; it's about reclaiming your sanity. Trust me, everything—from navigating client calls to managing social media—becomes infinitely more manageable (and dare I say, enjoyable) with the right support system in place. So, bring others in before you think you're ready. Whether it's hiring a virtual assistant to handle administrative tasks or outsourcing your least favorite business tasks, remember: teamwork makes the dream work.
I outsourced social media first in my business, and brought on an assistant shortly after that. Now I have a complete team of amazing integrators who are skilled in lots of areas, so I can stay in my zone which is operations strategy, and they can execute, and honestly they do it all better than me anyway!
One piece of advice, remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach to this journey of business and motherhood. Embrace the imperfections, lean on your support system, and find joy in the chaos, and I guarantee you'll discover that you're capable of more than you ever imagined.
Here's to navigating the beautiful mess together. Cheers to us, the recovering superwomen.
